Tulum The small town of
Tulum
( 131 km south of Cancun
) surprises visitors
with an international
atmosphere along side
remnants of a Mayan
village.
There is an
unusual blend of
traditional Mayan huts,
French restaurants,
boutiques, muffler
repair shops, and some
budget lodging.
The city
is also a transit point
for buses cruising south
to Chetumal
and Belize
.
There are great cenotes
near Tulum; most of them
have been explored,
making access to them
easy and safe. Among the
most famous are the
cenote Calavera, the
Grand Cenote, ("Sac Actun" or white cave in
Maya), and the Car Wash,
("Actun Ha" or water
cave in Maya).
The hotel zone of
Tulum
(a beachfront region
located a couple of km.
south of the city) is
yet another delight for
those in search of
peace
and tranquility.
Cabanas, camp grounds,
and some simple but
charming eco-hotels are
sprinkled along this
long and beautiful 10
kilometer stretch of
beach.
There are only 7
kilometers of paved
road. Not all the
establishments have
electricity, a generator
is needed, and only a
few have lights after
midnight.
It is a
perfect and beautiful
place for a romantic
getaway, be it in a
comfortable hotel room
or in a candle-lit
rustic cabin with a
thatched roof.
The
sunrise in Tulum is one
of the most beautiful
along the coast.
